PITTSBURGH (November 2013) – The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is all a flutter with the news of a new viewing window for the flamingo flock. The window is generously sponsored through a $25,000 grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.
“Our visitors love seeing the flamingos and have told us they miss them during the cooler months when the birds take shelter inside,” says Dr. Barbara Baker, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “Now, our visitors can enjoy the birds all through the year, thanks to a wonderful donation from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.”
The new addition has a heated floor, large viewing windows, a doorway into the back pool area, and a sprinkler system for enrichment. Keepers say that the 10 flamingos love the room and enjoy sleeping in it together.
“The Pittsburgh Zoo is a vital asset to our community,” said Mary Anne Papale, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield’s director of community affairs. “It’s our hope that the new exhibit will encourage families to visit the flamingos and enjoy an active and healthy day at the Zoo.”
Flamingos are well-known for their pink coloring, which comes from the food that they eat. These birds are very social and live in large colonies.
