January Sets New Attendance Record

January reaches highest monthly attendance at Pittsburgh Zoo
Weather a factor in high number.

(Pittsburgh) (January 2013)—Visitors to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium helped propel January’s attendance to the highest monthly attendance ever in Zoo history.

“We are very excited and thrilled that so many visitors came in January,” says Dr. Baker, president & CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “Weather is such a factor in our attendance that setting a new record is not something that we anticipate happening in the winter. We only budged for 11,000 visitors for the month and halfway through we knew that we were going to tie or break the monthly attendance record.”

January’s attendance of 15, 839 with just two days left, broke the previous record of 13,353 visitors set in 2007 when the Zoo opened Water’s Edge, and it topped the second highest January attendance of 12,206 set in 2012. The Zoo also recorded the third highest yearly attendance for the past five years in 2012 at 945,000.

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many of the outdoor animals including the polar bears, tigers, leopards, and even the lions like the colder weather and play in the snow. Visitors can warm up during a winter visit in the Tropical Forest and the PPG Aquarium.
