Zoo Hosts International Elephant and Rhino Symposium

(International Elephant & Rhino Symposium)

(Pittsburgh) (August 2013)—Elephant and rhino experts from around the world are converging on Pittsburgh this week as part of the 2013 International Elephant & Rhino Symposium, hosted by the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in partnership with the International Elephant Foundation and International Rhino Foundation.

More than 200 elephant and rhino researchers, scientists, and keepers from areas such as Zimbabwe, South Africa, Germany, Cambodia, Indonesia, and India are attending information-rich workshops and interactive demonstrations. Sessions will include information on the most up-to-date accomplishments and developments in animal behavior, husbandry, veterinary care, and research.

“This symposium is a great opportunity to learn about ground-breaking work in research, veterinary care, and breeding from a very talented and diverse group of experts,” says Dr. Barbara Baker, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “Their continuous efforts in the field are not only helping to save the declining populations of rhinos and elephants in the wild, but also to further our efforts here in the United States and the care and conservation of these animals.”

In addition to this year’s symposium, 12-year-old Alex Rine of Kenmore, New York will be honored for raising $12,000 in support of elephant research.

All of the symposium participants will also enjoy a special trip to the Zoo’s International Conservation Center in Somerset County.
